I just changed the fluid and filter in my 84 Vette. It has a 700R4 Auto. The problem is that it has reverse just no forward gears. I have only added 4qts in hopes of not over filling it. I just read the specs on the fluid amounts for this model and it said (10)qts. Is this correct? And do you all think that if it had this (10)qts I might get the forward gears to work? Tough call before I spring for a rebuild on it.
unless you drained the converter, and flushed the lines, there is NO WAY you will get 10qts. back in it- but dont sweat- first, make sure you have enough fluid in there:
1. start the car
2. manually shift car through all gears( while NOT moving)
3 place Trans back in park, and keep engine running
4. check fluid level- add if low
Did you unhook/mess with/disconnect the TV valve or cable at anytime while you were changing the fluid?

Any help or ideas here would be helpful.
Thanks,
The pan drop and refill usually takes right around 4.5 qts on an 84. The 82-86 transmissions use a slightly shallower pan than later versions. Aftermarket pans will change this number also.
If the fluid is full, and the car has now forward gears, drop the shifter down to low 1 and try it.
Also, did you use sealer on the pan gasket? If yes, you pay have plugged the servo dump hole.
Worst case is a burnt forward clutch pack, requiring an overhaul.
The factory frictions are prone to delamination from age.
