emergency brake
emergency brake broke? pulled up handle now loose brake light on..when i push the button in to engage or disengage it the thing wont push in-the car at first wouldnt go in reverse but now does--i hear a screaching noise from the rear...
is it safe to drive to my repair guy? any suggestions as to what is happening..thinking the cable came off or the gear where the latch pulls up

Sounds like the release button on the handle has problems and brake is still on. Do not drive it until you/ve loosen the cable adjustment under the car.

Screeching sounds like when my rear brakes wore down too far (I didn't realize they were so far down because the sensors had broken off a long time ago 
). Mine had some bad wiring and crusted up grease inside the handle mechanism (we think that the brake had been on for years to cause the rear brakes to wear out on a car with so little mileage).

My handle malfuntioned and I took it off and cleaned it up, put it back on, adjusted the brakes (with cable adjustment under rear of car). Its been good since. Mine didn'r break just got dirty and started sticking.
