I am a little perplexed. Pep Boys wanted 300+ to change the valve cover gaskets. It looks to be very cut and dry to me. Is there any hidden obsticle when changing the gaskets that would warrent this charge?

I almost forgot, the AIR crap might have to come off too. I can't remember since mine doesn't have it anymore. Still no big f'n deal! Go elsewhere.....
I let them change my clutch. It was 299.00 for the labor and I supplied the clutch. I had them check for oil leaks and they came up with the VC and rear main seal. They wanted almost 400 for the rear main seal. I told the guy he had to be out of his mind considering the trans was already out for the clutch. He said well that's their price. I told him forget about it. They did a real good job with my bro's LT1 clutch. My clutch is real good now but the other rip off stuff I could do with out.
Consider the cost of a set of FelPro Perma Dry gaskets is maybe $20-$30, leaving ~$275 for labor.
So maybe they are charging $80/hr and flat rate is 3 1/2hrs??
On my '88 L98 to remove the valve sovers I had to:
-lift the injector wire channels
-move the Alt & AIR pump forward
-remove the PCV tube
-move the Alt & bracket forward
-remove the vent tube
-remove the EGR tube
-unbolt & work out the valve covers
Hmmm, maybe not so far off if is the LT1 is similar??
Of course, if you turn wrenches at all, this would be a great little Sat. afternoon project and a good excuse to buy a FSM...
Also note that the stock gaskets on your LT1 valve covers are rubber and thus won't get wrecked if you have to loosen & retighten the bolts during re-assembly.
I just did this on my 94 and have one thing to add. To get the drivers side VC out I had to remove the wiper motor connection in addition to the bracket on the backside of the alternator.
After changing out the rocker arms and I had them adjusted too tight, I had to pull the VC back off and readjust them. Well when I did that, I was able to pull the VC off, readjust the rockers, and put it all back together in an hour and a half.
Note here: I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL MECHANIC, but a dumb old school teacher. Anyone with a few tools can do this job and save a few bucks. LT1 engine.
I agree, this isn't a big job. I tend to be on the lazy side sometimes and would rather pay somebody and come back in a few hrs. to pick it up but man what a waste of money.
