If it's the same as my LT-4, it should take 4.5 quarts with the filter, so you need 5 quarts.

P.S.

I noticed you are in Milpitas. I lived in Fremont for six years. I worked at The Palo Alto Medical Clinic.

I always buy a 12 pack case.
Sometimes buy 2 filters at a time.
Allways have enough for the next change.

Okay I feel like an idiot but....I just did my first oil change on the new Vette. I read that it takes
4.5 quarts in the manual. I filled it up, started it let it run for a min. waited a minute and checked
the level. It was in the add section of the stick so I poured the rest in (5 qt. total) again started it
for a sec. then checked again. Now it is just barely above the operation level. What’s up? does
it need more? or will I be underneath tonight trying to drain that extra half qt? Sorry for the
stupid question but I don't want to hurt my motor.

Oh it's a 96 LT4

If it really is a half quart over, it will be fine. Good job with the first oil change. Did you fill up the new filter with oil before installing it?

Why do you need to fill the oil filter before installing it?

I've been doing oil changes for more than 30 years and have always installed the filter dry.

Is it that important? I'd have thought I'd have heard of it before now if it was.

I always fill my filters. I heard somewhere that when you start it without filling the filter the motor will have less lubrication until the filter is filled. May not be true but it doesn't hurt. Okay so what your saying is go with 4.5 qts. and call it good ignoring what I'm reading off the dip stick. Sound right?

I got a 5 quart jug at Wally World for a bit over $20 filled the car with about 4.5 quarts it looked a little low on the stick so in went the other half quart and now mine is on the high side of the operating range. I am happy with that so 5 quarts for me. PS FSM said LT1 capacity is 4.5 quarts and I don't remember what LT5 was but it was a lot more 7 or 8 I think.

I've been changing the oil in my L-T for 11 years, and it's always taken 5 quarts to fil to the top of the dip-stick line.
