Default Insulation Help

In the process of installing new carpet in my 85. I haven't received my new mass backed carpet, but I assume that some of the existing insulation (matting) will be reused as it's glued in. Is there something I can use in place of this. The piece on each side of the leg room area is quite thick. Thanks.

Nope, you remove all the old insulation, clean and scrape... Now would be the time to seal any leaks or spaces, install some sound and/or fireproofing material before you do the mass back carpet install...
As a side note, i did a Rino lining on my metal before installing sound & fire-proofing material, then mass back carpet... made a world of difference in sound and no air gaps...
Take your time, and do a search on carpet install, there's certain areas that you do first...
Try to save your old carpet to use as a template for your new install, there's always trim and cut - measure 3 times ; cut 1 time

Thanks, that is what I was hoping. I did do some insulation as you sugested. I replaced the original with plastic backed 8 years ago. Faded terrible. The only good pieces are the front floor pieces on both sides. No noticeable wear or fade at all. Will probably see if there is a buyer for them soon. Mike

Mike: something to think about, if you plan to upgrade with new amp and sterio, you might consider running the wires and RCA connectors now makes for a clean install later..
One other thing i did, was run a new heavy duty ground (front & back) under the carpet, just in case ......

Today I tore every piece of that fiber stuff out from under the console, sides of console, and under the dash. It looked like crap and it smelled. What can I use to replace this. I assume it's for heat and sound.
