I haven't done it yet, but it doesn't look that difficult. I saw a few earlier posts by some of the folks that recovered using the "cushioned" pads that said it wouldn't allow the door to open all the way.

I have REPAIRED the cover on the console of my car as the edges were coming unglued. In doing this, it appears the original cover was heated to allow it to conform to the geometry of the door. This may be difficult to reproduce in your garage.

I too have successfully repaired the console door by re-gluing the leather along its edges.
I attempted to recover the console door in my '86 IORC-Z and finally gave it up due to the problems with the compound curves.
