Looking for advice on the best way to get to the AC controller on a 96 such as which side it is located on and what has to be removed to get to it? Any suggestions to make the job easier will be appreciated.
I believe that it is located just to the left of the brake pedal on the inside of the firewall. It helps if you are a contortionist to get to it and I believe you have to remove the lower portion of the instrument panel in order to service it.
Air/heat comes out the floor vent and defroster vent regardless of where I set it. Some of the guys on here told me several months ago that often times the tubing that connects to the controller could be lose, broken, etc. Any thoughts?
There is a plastic check valve that hooks into the intake (remove the fuel rail cover on the passenger side). Sometimes that breaks and one of the hoses from the valve goes to the a/c controller.
Mine has the same problem and it's a pain to get to. It's located just above the gas pedal to the right and mounted adjacent to the firewall. You will have to remove the carpeted piece under your dash. There is a common vacuum source to this module that goes into the manifold. The outputs from your selector/temperature module feed solenoids in the manifold that in turn direct the vacuum source to different dampers in your dash. Worked on mine last summer and had no success. However I had plenty of vacuum to the manifold. Figured mine was electrical or I had stuck dampers. Read some posts about this same problem and some said parts to fix problem were around $700. It was not worth it to me, besides the A/C will work and keep you cool. On the other hand, I like to ride with the windows down.

This is the place to start. These disintegrate with time and age from exposure to the heat. Any GM dealer should carry them. I think I paid about $6 for mine at a Buick dealer a few years ago.
