i have a 87 that takes a long time to start, then when it finally does start you can smell fuel and you need to hit the gas to clear it out. one shop said it is a cold start injector? but it does it all the time, outside temp has no effect; but over the cold winter it just sits anyways
there is no check engine light on, but i will try to scan it to see if there is any codes
just wanted to get some ideas or if anyone else had this problem
I would check for a leaking injector first up.
If none are leaking, then it could well be the oil pressure switch at the rear of the block....until this "reads" 4psi, IIRC, the engine won't start.
The ONLY way the cold start injector is the problem is if it cranks longer when it's cold (< 95* engine temp). If it cranks longer when the engine is warm as it does when the engine is cold, then I would check the injectors. Ohm test the injector terminals and use a fuel pressure gauge to check fuel pressure leak down. Also pull some plugs, after priming the fuel system, to check for raw fuel on the plug tips.
Do you hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds when you turn on the key? if not = bad fuel pump relay and it has to build oil pressure before it will start. Gas smell could be a leak.
