Default AC/Htr control ???

On the red 91.
Today, I went to adjust the temp down.
It will not go down.
It will go up.
So for now I have it up to 76 degrees (kept playing with it), but it does nothing when I push the down button.
There seems to be no way to turn on the AC when it finally warms up.
Its the automatic control type AC/Heat.

Whats the fix.
Do I get a new electronic gizmo to put behind the buttons.
Do I get behind the button and jump out the switch untill its down to 68, and then do not touch the automatic up-down temp adjustment.
Will it fix itself when it warms up some.

The freon leaks out over time. I was going to get it fixed for good when it got hot outside. I dont think thats possible the way the button is acting right now though.

Thanks for the help.

When the Control Panel doesn't respond to an input, it's usually bad. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery first. It and the Processor (the Programmer) are linked to the CCM and the best way to diagnose the system is with a Bi-directional scanner though from what you're describing, there's nothing external to the Controls that would cause it to do what it is or isn't doing. Sometimes clearing memory gets it back - often it doesn't, but I'd try it first anyway.

If it's out of or low on gas, the a/c isn't going to work regardless of the temp setting.

At a minimum I know you probably need to disassemble and clean the contact points inside the climate control panel. My 96 started with the temp buttons not responding or responding intermittently and progressed to most of the heat, air, defrost etc buttons not working also. I did a search and found a good post on how to clean the unit myself. NOT A HARD JOB AT ALL. While it was fresh in my mind I revised to original post and updated it. The link below use to get you to my revised post.

Give this a shot first.

same thing happens to my '95. the problem is that the little door that controls heat and cold is not working. it's either shut or open depending on what the temp is hot or cold. i can't fix it though i have tried. so i am going to take it to a dealer. hope this helps.

Is there not some solders point under a back box in the footwell on the drivers side that could be the trouble as well? My moneys on a bad electronic controller since you cant adjust the temp either way.

I don't agree. If I am reading the original post correct the temp numbers on the auto climate control will not go down, only up. This tells me the contact points behind the down button are not making contact to send the signal to the temp door to operate to a lower temperature. It is a very common problem with these control units for the contacts to get some sort of film (dirt) on them that will stop the contacts from making the circuit. Removing the control panel, disassembling it and cleaning the contacts with a clean soft pencil eraser and rubbing alcohol corrects a lot of problems with the auto climate control units.

Right,
The up (increase) button would work, while the down (decrease button) had no response.
I just didnt want to get the thing up to 80 or more fiddleing with it.

It decided to fix itself today, I could ajust the down button and got it down to 70.
It worked up and down real well today.
I will clean the contacts as suggested, thanks for the help and the links.
Should be easy enough.
