Sometimes CATS can go bad and you will get a rattle sound. However, they say CATS are supposed to last the lifetime of the car and normally only go bad if there is something else wrong with the car.

Had same type of rattle coming from ??????? It drove me crazy for bout
six weeks cause it was so hard to find. Turns out, after a lot of looking, a piece INSIDE the cat had broken loose. It would only "sing" at certain RPMs.

i had a loud rattle from under the car (87 vert) turns out the exhaust was barely touching the x brace..( probably from the alignment shops using the x brace to lift the car) .
so id do a visual look-see of the entire exhaust and check for clearance issues !!

Dual mass flywheel. Sounds like rocks rattling in a can. I did nothing about it and and got less and less till I hardly hear it anymore. I read about it here on the forum several years ago. One of those things you don't fix till it breaks. Do a search on dual mass and see if that helps you any. That's for 6 speeds of course. Looks like you have an auto.
