My radio conked out on me last week. How hard is it to replace with an aftermarket one??

It would be easier and probably less costly to get your radio repaired. The largest problem with an aftermarket radio is the fact that it has built in amplifiers and your radio has an amplifier at each speaker. This makes it necessary to run wires through the car to your speakers which will also have to be disconnected from the amplifier and connected to the wires that you run to them.

Harder than a non- Bose system. Do a search, there have been a lot of responses in the past with plenty of details.

I got a quote from a local custom audio dealer. $580 for the complete system, head unit, and 4 speakers, includes the adapter, (1 din unit in 1.5 din hole), and installation.

If you repair the Bose, it's still a Bose, with old amps at each speaker.

I paid to have a new Kenwood system with 4 new speakers installed by professionals. Cost me $700. I'm happy.

I bought the car with aftermarket radio installed(Alpine). I am assuming all the wiring is already done and all I have to do is buy a new unit and hook/reconnect the wires. I guess I better ask an installer first before I jump in.

Actually you do not have to run new wires if you go with an aftermarket speaker. When you remove the bose speaker there is 4 wires inside the box that is covered in a black foam material. These wires are a little tricky to find BUT they are in there.

Find the 4 wires and cut them so you will have as much as possible sticking out. Then get a OHM meter and with the head unit out, check the resistance from the connector to the radio to the wires you cut. You will find that 2 of the 4 you cut are the 2 at the back of the radio.

Solder wires from these two wires to a pig tail to hook to your new speakers. Speakers will work perfect.

BE SURE to tape the other 2 wires with electrical tape and tuck them back in the box. These are the power wires to the amp.

I replaced my Bose with all pioneer and had less then 300 bucks in it (minus subs and amp). And I was AMAZED at the sound!

Phil

PM me if you want more info!

Got all my stuff on eBay! $100 for a very nice (used) Kenwood, 4 new speaker and the wiring. Rewired the whole car "de-bose", sounds better than ever now. Now for that irritating sys light flashing.............

It is not that hard, just cut the wires that go to each amp & run them to each speaker & you are up and running. It works I have done it. Send me your year and I will get you wiring diagram so you know what wires to look for.
