Default Letters on 87, keep or remove?

I am interested in knowing your opinions on whether to keep the letters on my 87 vette.
These are raised and sit on top of the rear covering. I don 't know if removing them will leave me with a huge mess where they use to be, or if there will be holes because they pop in plus stick on.
Who knows these things?
They are in ok shape, just don't know if I should wait until I repaint the car (which could be a long while since the paint is in great shape) before messing with them.
Anyone seen the rear of an 87 styled vette with the letters removed?

There will be a large mess, and two locating holes. If you try to fill the holes and paint over them, over time the filler will shrink and screw up your paint.

They shouldn't because they have the "sunken in" corvette script on them that people usually fill with vinyl stickers to make the letters stick out more.

Right. You don't want to buy a real ZR1 style rear bumper anyway because it's wider that the one on the regular Corvette. Usually, the rear bumper that you buy with the square lights is a regular 91 or up...
