I feel your pain , struggled with same thing. The bumper also "bows" out in the middle. I finally went with about 1/2 inch sticking out on the inner tips and then when they were welded I used a straight edge to position the outer one at the same which is a bit more extending and also kept them level with the ground. I liked the level look more than matching the cars curve, as you say, they look en-even then.
Many C4 owners seem to like the tips protruding from the back of the car a few inches or more. Not me. Look at all the new cars w/ duals; (sports cars, SUVS, whatever) all of them have the tips end at the body line. It just looks better that way....like they are a part of the car and not an extension.

I messed with mine for a good while on this issue. I deciced to make each tip stick out about half an inch past the lip of the bumper. It makes them uneven with each other but I liked that a little better. I also made them all line up height wise parallel to the ground.
