Inspect everything first. Torque the wheel first top to bottom (12 & 6 o'clock) then both sides (9 & 3). Look for excessive movement. Shocks need to be changed like any other moving part.
Buy the best shock you can afford. Don't save on brake parts or shocks.
just bounce the car up and down with the hood up and see where the noise is coming from, if its the shocks you should be able to tell right away.
Get some Bilsteins... they are some of the stiffer shocks and pair up well with the C4's stiff suspension. I just got 4 new shocks several months back. It was a pretty easy DIY job too.
nope no polys... and had new bilsteins put on at around 80k miles and there is 160k now so... all the other suspension is stock.. ill have someone bounce the car for me and try to pin point the noise

80K is a lot on shocks. My bilstein have 50K and are getting bouncy. The sound may not be the shocks. With 160K it could be other things. I would have a front end shop look at it.
