..i myself didn't want to risk breaking anything so, what i did was remove the cruise control (above the battery) and simply lifted the battery on it's side MOMENTARILY and it slipped both in and out easily!...i also had a SEALED battery (maint-free)....

Those stars are "Torx" heads. One of the best things you can do for the car is purcahse a quality set of torx bits. I don't remember the size off the top of my head, but the Craftsman set has always included whatever size I needed!
It is very easy to remove the side panel, I think the torx size is 40 or 45. Just don't buy an Optima Red Top battery. I just replaced one after two years; what a POS. I think it was bad from the beginning. At least it was still under warantee.
