Default LT4 with an Auto?

My lt1 with 35k on the ticker is leaking oil like a bucket shot with buck shot..
so my dad and I have deceided to rebuild it.
But we also know where an LT4 is. The only thing the LT4 is missing the heads,
But the real question is Could my Auto tranny handle the LT4?

Probably. There are 2 very weak areas on the 4l60 and 4l60e transmissions made after 1990. The first is the forward sprag. GM decided to eliminate part of the cage that held the sprag element together. The single cage design tend to break rather easily with 400 plus hp. The sunshell also tends to snap the snout off. Both are easy addressed in a rebuild with aftermarket parts.

At 35k I would bet all that is leaking is the intake gasket.

35k miles is hardly time for a rebuild.

Unless you just have to have the extra 30hp, fix the leaks.

(LT4 heads won't be cheap...)

If you really want the extra hp, forget the LT4 bottom end (it's essentially the same as your LT1) and just go with a heads/cam package on the LT1. Cheaper and every bit as effective as an LT4.

That's my $0.02
