Hello friends,I have a question that was simple at first but got me second guessing myself the longer I thought about it,I'll put the question to you and see what you all think.I hooked my code scanner up today and kept getting a code 13 = 02 sensor,I thought fine I'll replace the 02 sensor, this is an 84 we're talking about. Then the confusion started, the further I read about the 02 sensor the more I doubted myself,I wondered did It flash the 13 code because the sensor is bad and I need a new one or is it something before the sensor that's causing it to have an abnormal reading,And I get no other codes besides the 13,I erased all the codes in the computer and retested it, same thing code 13,I don't notice any thing wrong with engine performance, exept maybe that when it is drove for about 15 min at higway speeds (45-65mph) the throttle response is lame unless you step on it,then hold on,but I don't know if the 02 sensor is related to that,it doesn't smoke or get bad feul milage or even idle rough,I've probably just thought on it too much, would you say change sensor,or check something else before that?
You will need to check into it a little futher. When the ECM throws a code, that means it has seen a voltage, ect out of it's preset limits. It could be the connection to the ECM, wiring between the ECM and O2 sensor connector, the connection at the O2 sensor, the O2 sensor it self, or a faulty ECM. If the O2 sensor is due for a change, I would go ahead and put a new one in. Check the wiring (making sure it's not touching the exhaust), the connection (making sure it's clean and tight), and the tip of the sensor (for color).
If you replace it, make sure to put antiseize on the thread first. Most O2 sensors come out of the box with antisieze on the thread. When you start the engine after the swap, you will see smoke. Not to worry as it is just the antiseize burning off.
Read this info below. AGENT86 did this for us. It is from an 86 FSM, but should be close, but not exact to your 84. Good luck.
