Default Floppy A4 PRNDL??? Help!

Hi guys!

'92 A4.

The little window next to the shift lever that indicates what gear you're in (I've always known it as the PRNDL ) is floppy.

Any idea how to correct it? When you move the gearshift from P to OD or whatever....this little window with the letters and the bar indicating which gear you've selected moves around ....like it's not connected to whatever it SHOULD be connected to.

Didn't find anything relevant in several searches.

Need yer brainpower!

Thanx!

Wow, an easy one!! It is held in from the underside by two screws. Take the cover off, replace two screws, re-assemble. Of course taking the cover off is a little tricky, but what isn't? Let me know if you need step-by-step instructions.

Thanks for the quick reply!!!!

Would LOVE step-by -steps!

Have FSM and a couple other manuals, but none address this specific problem.

Thanks a bunch!

OK!

Tools required--Two beers, 10mm socket, 1/4 drive, small torx head screwdriver, phillips screwdriver.

1. Step One--open beer
2. Gather tools
3. Sip beer
4. Remove the 4 10mm screws and slide the console cover out of the way. No need to unplug the wires to the light
5. Sip more beer
6. Under the little piece of carpet in the storage area there are two more 10mm screws to be taken out.
7. See #5 above.
8. Look down in the front cup holder and you should see the small, very small actually, torx head screw that needs to come out.
9. Move shift lever back to D or #2 (whatever just ot give some room).
10. Lift rear of the cover and slide it back just a little so the tabs in the front clear.
11. You are almost done, how's the beer?
12. Take the wires loose from the hatch release button.
13. At this point you should be able to raise the cover enough to see and re-install the 2 missing screws. If you want to take the cover off you will also have to disconnect the cig lighter wires and the shift **** and boot. OR just work from underneath with a stubby screwdriver (my choice).
14. Finish first beer, you will be done in about 5 minutes!
15. Re-assemble being sure the pointer legs straddle the shift 'finger' that make the indicator move. Also be sure the little light bulb down there did not 'pop out' of the holder.
16. Re-assemble in reverse order.
17. Put tools, etc, away
18. Drink the other beer while admiring your workmanship.

I think it took me longer to type this than it will take you to do the job, dang, I need a beer.

All Done!

I think your Corvette must be a bit different than mine.

Didn't need to do the 4 screws and console slide!

Between your directions and what I could glean from the FSM, it was fairly straight-forward. Your directions were the more helpful of the 2!!!

Hadda make one run to Home Depot for some #8 x 5/8 screws to replace the ones that originally held the PRNDL in place, and are now "Ghosts in the machine". One more rattle to listen for!

Thanks for your help....it was easily enough done from the underside that I didn't need to follow the FSM instructions to remove the shift ****, etc....

If yer ever in Oregon, I'll buy you those coupla brews!!!!
