I am new to this forum and looking to get some input on 85-91 C4's. Is the four speed or 5 speed hydraulic clutch ? I am not sure. Pardon some dumb questions, but I need expertise on to these matters. Next question is what year did the C4 come with the rounded dash and analog gauges ? I don't like the digital dash, if I could stay away from it, I would.
I know many vettes are automatic. What about the ease of use of the manuals and their reliability ?
Welcome, Neekos. I'm looking for a Vette too. You'd better not go and get one on Long Island before I do! Anyways. The 1990 has the new interior but the old front and back bumper (and side louvers). The 1991 starts the new rounder front and rear bumper and side louvers. The 1992 starts the LT1 engine. (The ZR1 in 1990 started the rounded out rear bumper.)
Welcome!
From '84 to '88 the manual trans was a 4 speed with computer controlled overdrive in the top 3 gears. Chevy calls it 4+3. From '89 to '96 the manual is a 6 speed made by ZF in Germany. I know that the 6 speeds have a hydraulic clutch.
I've heard that 80% of all C4's are automatics. Easy to use? C4 Vettes have 330 ft-lbs of torque (OK crossfires have 290), they need big transmissions and clutches. They don't shift like Hondas.
Welcome to the forum and good hunting for your Vette. You got some good reply's. Finding a manual trans is going to be harder to find, alot more auto's were made.
Keep in mind that most auto's came with the 2:59 gears or 3:07's, so when you test drive an auto trans Vette, don't expect a "Rocket Sled", you will have to change gears for that after purchase or find one that has had it done.........3:73's go best with the LT1 auto and 3:45's go well with the L98.........LT4 engines (with 6 speed manual only) go well with 4:09/4:10's.......... :seeya
