I need some good advise. Lately my '92 vette has been acting strangely. Sometimes the wipers will be at regular speed instead of interum speeds. Or they will start to wipe and stop in the middle of the windshield and the start again. Or they will just keep wiping after turned off for a couple of minutes then stop.
Also my dash lights will dim way down for a undermined amount of time. Sometimes they wil brighten back to normal and sometimes they may stay dim for several days.
I also experience an engine shutdown, but will start right back up. I did recently replace the Opti-spark OEM with an MSD aftermarket. The described issues were happening BEFORE I replaced the Opti-Spark. I had to replace it because it had gotten wet and blew the old one and of course the car wouldn't start at all.
Can anybody help?? Is there a relay of regulater that may effect the above problems?
The lights dimming down and brightening is most likely due to the alternator not charging the battery intermittently. If this is happening, your dash voltmeter will indicate so by going from 13 - 14 volts while charging (lights normal brilliance) to below 13 volts, in the twelves (lights dim). Also, the red battery symbol light on the dash will come on and you should take notice of this as it tells you that the battery is not being charged. The engine shutting down can be from a poor connection of the battery cables to the battery. I recommend you remove the battery cables (neg first) and clean the cable lugs, bolts, and the battery terminals and then replace the cables (neg last). If the alternator stops charging, your battery voltage will continually drop and the engine will stop running around 10 volts, but usually a battery this badly discharged will not crank the engine for starting.
Another place to look is the fuses near the battery. The fuse clips should be bright and not corroded so that they make good electrical connection and continously pass current to the car. I own an 87 and I believe that the 92 has a bank of fuses near the battery.
Your wipers sound like they have a similar intermittent power problem. Also, the intermittent wipe control and switch in the door becomes intermittent and requires spraying with electrical contact cleaner.
