Default Heater core bypass.

My heater core is leaking and I am way too lazy to fix it. Besides, I almost never need to turn it on since I am in California.

Anyways, I see how all the cooling lines for the heater system are routed but I was wondering what would be the best way to bypass it? Seems to me like capping off the water pump and cooling system tank thing would be OK, but I need some expert advice.

Just did this on my 87 but not sure if the cooling routing/lines are the same for the LT1.

More of a challenge on the LTx cars, it'll take a bit of thought to do it properly due to the integration of the surge tank. Definitely do-able. Kinda stupid but do-able.

Would you mind giving me some advice? I'm pretty sure I just need to cap off the surge tank and water pump.

Cap off the surge tank? I don't believe I'd try that. Take the hose that runs from your engine directly to the heater core and hook it to the surge tank where the hose from the core to the surge tank is currently connected. You'll find that the hose and the connection you need to use at the tank are now different sizes. Adapt, improvise and overcome. And above all else, enjoy!
While rather time consuming, the heater core replacement on C4s is not quite as bad as it is made out to be sometimes. With a manual, a little patience and an adequate supply of (most importantly) beer, most anyone should be able to tackle it.

Like Corvette Kid said, Do NOT by-pass the surge tank!!!! Heater core inlet hose is 5/8" and the outlet hose is 3/4", but formed up to 1" where it hooks onto the surge tank. You can by-pass the heater core ONLY and will have to make an adapter due to the different sizes.

So am I literally going to have to make an adapter or should I be able to find one at the parts store/hardware store?

A hardware store would be best bet.

Well, my first (and probably the best idea) didn't work out since nobody carried it. I was just looking for a simple barb fitting that had 3/4" on one side and 5/8" on the other. Ace and Lowes didn't have it, so I had to use individual barb fittings with a coupling in the middle. It isn't pretty but it sure does the job! I bypassed the throttle body coolant lines while I was in there too.

My 86 started leaking.....I went to my local Autozone and went back to where they had all the custom heater hoses hanging up and found a "U" shaped molded hose that had 5/8" on one side and 3/4" on the other.......Cut the two small hoses off that come out of the heater core on the outside of the firewall and inserted the "U" between the two pipes that run into the heater.........Been like that for two years.....Got a new core, someday when I really feel like I want my butt kicked I might put it in........
Have a Great Day!!!!!!!!
