Default Center Console Update / Replacement

I didn't want to hijack USA1LT1's post.

I'm tired of looking at my worn out center console on my 95 Coupe. The part in particular is the rubber coated piece around the shifter. The piece around the radio still looks great.

Has anyone seen a custom piece that replaces this rubber coated pos?

I'm not sure if I want to;
  1. Replace with a new rubber coated piece
  2. Strip the coating & paint
  3. Seek custom work to replace the entire center console

Any comments?

I painted all my console pieces so they would match, they were all pealing anyway. They turned out good and I like them a lot better than the pealing. If replacement pieces could be had for a reasonable amount of money I would rather go that way but for a bit of work and little money I am very happy with the paint job. By the way I went with satin black, I think flat might be better though.

Mine was the same way. I painted it red first, then black over that. then wrapped it in foil and pulled it off right away. In person it looks like black marble with red veins in it.

I agree the replacements are way over priced. They are all over the place on Ebay for around a hundred dollars and they never sell. You would think the price would come down a bit.

Lightly spray with throttle body cleaner in the shade. You should be able to peel it off after.

I very carefully scrapped it off with a sharp knife and then sanded all the scratches and gouges out.

Hey, whatever works.

A blow torch may work well also. Seriously, you could melt it off or at least get it too bubble.

you may want to check out SEM interior paint products. I have excellent results with their products and they have the flat metallic finishes that are hard to replicate. All the parts I've done look factory fresh.

Never said I did it the easy way. I was afraid of chemicals doing more damage than good. Most of the sanding was just to prep the surface for painting but yea there were a few areas I got a little carried away.

Haven't been on for awhile. I expected this thread to be buried.

I think I'm going to take it off this coming weekend & paint it. If it doesn't look bad, I'll keep it awhile. It it turns out like crap, I guess I'll go with a replacement.

I post some pics of my results.

Thanks guys.
