I'm tired of looking at my worn out center console on my 95 Coupe. The part in particular is the rubber coated piece around the shifter. The piece around the radio still looks great.
Has anyone seen a custom piece that replaces this rubber coated pos?
I'm not sure if I want to;
Replace with a new rubber coated piece
Strip the coating & paint
Seek custom work to replace the entire center console
I painted all my console pieces so they would match, they were all pealing anyway. They turned out good and I like them a lot better than the pealing. If replacement pieces could be had for a reasonable amount of money I would rather go that way but for a bit of work and little money I am very happy with the paint job. By the way I went with satin black, I think flat might be better though.
Mine was the same way. I painted it red first, then black over that. then wrapped it in foil and pulled it off right away. In person it looks like black marble with red veins in it.
I agree the replacements are way over priced. They are all over the place on Ebay for around a hundred dollars and they never sell. You would think the price would come down a bit.

how did you get the coating off without damaging the palstic? just sanding?
you may want to check out SEM interior paint products. I have excellent results with their products and they have the flat metallic finishes that are hard to replicate. All the parts I've done look factory fresh.
It was easy .. I ordered shifter plate and the radio trim off ebay
They are perfect and they dont have the rubber junk on them
And It was so easy...lol
is that a joke? scrape it with a knife? then sand out the gouges? lol, just beat it with a hammer...then fill it in.....
Never said I did it the easy way. I was afraid of chemicals doing more damage than good. Most of the sanding was just to prep the surface for painting but yea there were a few areas I got a little carried away.
sanded mine today, sprayed it with a medium shine finish, looks not that good, i dont knwo what i did wrong, must be the paint, but its probebly the painter but anywase, looks like ill be ordering a new one

Haven't been on for awhile. I expected this thread to be buried.
I think I'm going to take it off this coming weekend & paint it. If it doesn't look bad, I'll keep it awhile. It it turns out like crap, I guess I'll go with a replacement.
