ignition coil install gone wrong
I installed a new ignition coil incorrectly. It seems as though I installed it without that little spring looking thing with the rubber tip that goes on the bottom. I ran it for a day and noticed no improvement. Bought a new cap, rotor, spark plugs, and sp wires and after removing the ignition coil that's when I realized what I did wrong. It looks like the coil got really hot and the plastic on the cap started to crack from getting hot as well. Is not installing that little spring/metal tip on the bottom of the ignition coil the problem? The new cap I bought comes with that piece and a rubber washer as well.

That little spring with the button transfers the electrical charge from the coil to the rotor which then distributes the charge to the plugs. If you left this out, the charge had to jump this gap to the rotor and may have damaged the coil. Can you have the coil tested?

the coil was actually burnt up from the bottom end. I did notice after installing the ignition coil that there was a weird sound then a little smoke from the hood. I didn't think it was anything, and figured it was just some oil that I spilled from an oil change. I think I'm just going to get it replaced at autozone and say it was faulty.
