I currently have a 93 A4 with 2.59's and I bought a 3.07 ring and pinion. What should this cost to have done? I thought that it would be just a simple gear swap. I just had a ring and pinion shop quote me $900! That was with labor and a new posi traction. The guy said the posi would need to be changed because gears 3.07 and up are different than 2.73s down. Any help would be nice!

They are correct. A good used 3:07 posi unit is required. If you are removing and replacing the pumpkin yourself, $900 is a bit salty. A used 3:07 pumpkin usually sells for $300-$500 here on the forum. Maybe buying a used one already set up could work to your advantage.

If you are going to swap gears going from a 2.59 to a 3.07 in a LT1 car it is not worth the trouble. You can buy a 3.5X or a 3.7X ratio that will work with what you have. You could get that done for a couple hundred bucks if you supply the parts.
The 2.x carrier is different than the 3.x carrier, hence, the new posi unit. You can either get the thick 3.x gears to go in the 2.x carrier or you can get the whole 3.x pumpkin and put the 3.x thin gears in. I think this route would save a little money, at least that's the way I went. It gives me the option of easily moving among any of the 3.x regular gears (the 2.x thick gears cost more money). Hope this makes sense.
none of the above
your money would be better spent on a D44 conversion!
Simply put ...you will not be satisfied with 3.07s.....if your car came with 3.07s you could mod around those gears and be somewhat satisfied.
but seeing that you are spenting hard earn money on gears.
do it right the first time ( D44 ) and be done with it.
P.S. wish I knew this before I spent money on a gear change in my A4.
I can honest say I waste over a grand trying to go your route!

I have to disagree.I swapped my 2:59 rear for a 3:07 and could not be happier. It is more responsive and puts the engine in a better part of it's rpm range when running 55 to 60 than the 2:59's did.It will not spin the tires every time you press the pedel but it will not kill your gas mileage either. If this is a daily driver I think you will be happy with the 3:07.
pete is the man but i thought you had to use a 3 series posi for 3.07 r/p pete says 2.73 posi will work would ask him again to be sure hey pete chime in thanks geo.
George,
Good catch. I believe my post is incorrect. I was always under the impression thet 2:59 and 2:73 used the same carrier and that 3:07's had the series 3. I will correct my post now. Thanks
