when i bought the car there was a nick in the hood and the gloss coat was lifting slightly and after a good rain yesterday i discovered today that the area immeadiatly surrounding the nick area has grown. any ideas on how to clean up or repair without reglossing the entire hood?

Hard thing to do on your own!
If the surrounding clearcoat is in good condition and thick enough, you can "peel", lightly sand (with approx 1500 grit), spot clearcoat, resand, and buff. For an amateur -- who's not done this before -- the odds of getting acceptable results aren't that good.
Spot blending can be done by a pro and look pretty good. The lighter the color, the better the result.
