You owners manual should give you recommended shift points. Obviously you don't want to over rev (go beyound the red line on the tach) while upshifting and you don't want to downshift at a speed that will cause the revs to climb too high when you let the clutch out.
Your owner's manual should have the numbers, as stated before. My 86 actually has an "Upshift" idiot light on the dash just to help out. I think it is there for EPA reasons. In order to make it's non-gasgussler numbers, you have to drive it perfectly. So that little light is supposed to help you do that.
I shift mine up around 1500, and down when it starts bucking.
