Unable to find info on paint preparation. I've just finished fiberglassing some lower rear fender extensions, and have several coats of paint (spray bombs ) . The surface feels rough . They were painted outdoors. My question is should I clean up this rough finish with fine steel wool or 1500 to 2000 sandpaper , prior to laying down clear coat or after the clear coat ? Thanks for any reply's. Earl.

Look under general corvette topics and there is a paint and body section. The guys in that group do some serious voodoo on vette bodies.
I would use 2500 wet paper and keep it wet wile knocking off the nibs and dirt. Make sure it's dry very well and all the dust is off then take it inside and clear coat it. After it dry's you might want to hit again very lightly with 3000 then a buff with fine cut cleaner and a soft application of a good wax. Easy on the buff part so you don't burn through your clear coat or paint. GOOD LUCK Pipe

I just painted my 86, not quite done yet, and I did it outside. However I used professional equipment & paint. wet sand the area with 1000 or 1500, smooth make sure you did not go throught to the primer (you did prime any bare fiberglass areas?) paint in the morning when all is still, wet down the surrounding area & under the car, tape off the panel you are painting, use a good 3m masking tape, did you wash the area with a de-waxer or at least with thinners?, very important - make sure you have sanded all the edges and into any body seams. use a damp clean rag (water) or a tack rag and while blowing with an air gun (or the outlet of a shop vac) wipe the area clean & dry. Now spray your clear coat. Good luck,
sand your base coat back with wet/dry 600 and finish with 1500.Put some washing up liquid in the water.when your happy with the finish hit it with clear.I normally give it a least 4or5 coats and wait 10 minutes between applications to let it tack up.When your done wait 24 hours before sanding out the orange peel with 1500.Buff it with a clear coat polishing compound.
