I just wanted to post my U-Haul experiences over this past week, there have been a lot of posts about news articles and reports on problems with U-Haul trailers. I towed my '85 Corvette 550 miles on a U-Haul trailer behind a 2004 F-150 Lariate Supercrew with a tow package. First, I had no issues renting from U-Haul for the corvette, they asked if I thought I could get sufficient clearance for it, and I indicated I could (and did).
On the trip, I had no problems with the trailer, the tires held up fine and the only time I noticed the trailer sway that gets reported on was when I was exceeding the recommended speed limit for the trailer by a significant amount. However I do have experience driving with trailers and new when my vehicle was at its limit and slowed down to compensate.
It isn't as good as a nice trailer with electronic brakes on it, and it is beastly heavy considering it is an open top trailer. However I had no issues with U-Haul, the people were friendly on the pickup and delivery end and the trailer performed well. I would recommend anyone who wants to tow their corvette themselves make sure they drive a vehicle suited for the tow, and have some previous experience towing because the auto trailer corvette combo is a heavy beast.
Hopefully I'll have some pictures of the '85 up here soon. My dad bought it new but its been garaged for five years now so it needs a lot of TLC to get her going again.
thanks for taking the time to post your findings. :-) I've thought about pulling mine a couple times using H-haul's trailer. Did you have one of the newer, aluminium ones?
No it was the old heavier then hell steel trailer the newer ones supposedly have less ground clearance. However if you place your reservation online and indicate you're hauling a corvette I think they find a shop with the steel one available. I was impressed because I was hauling from middle of nowhere Louisiana and they got me a shop within fifteen miles of my location.
I rented a Car Hauler from U-Haul a few years ago. When I got to the car I was wanting to haul home, it was a total piece of crap. When returning the Car Hauler to U-Haul, I mentioned what a waste of time it was as I had not even used the Car Hauler. They didn't charge me a nickel for the rental.
So there's at least four of us with GOOD U haul experiences!
But I probably won't rent trucks from them any more. They are converting the entire fleet to gasoline powered trucks. Seems like enough of the U haul clientele fills the tank with gas no matter what the vehicle required that they're making switch. I prefer diesel trucks. Going over Raton pass with the loaded Uhaul truck while towing the vette was a SLOOOOOOOOW proposition.
