Default 87 fuel pump, where?

I have reason to suspect the fuel pump in my 87. I'm at work, and don't have my fsm, did a search, and haven't found a good answer, so I'll ask here:

Where is the fuel pump on an 87 and how hard is it to change out?

This is very easy! Small torx to remove the fuel door, under that pull up the boot (remove gas cap first!) but becareful not to tear it. Then there are bolts holding the fuel sender in the tank. Remove those bolts and the whole thing comes out, the pump is on the rod. This only takes a few mins.

Yep, very easy novice work. Take the gas lid of by removing the 4 screws. Pull the rubber boot out carfully and disconnect the drain line. Disconnect the fuel feed line, return line, and EECS line. Disconnect the electrical connector and start removing the 9 bolts. The bolts have o-rings around them so you might want take one to NAPA and have them size it up and purchase 9. You also may want a gasket for the tank to fuel pump assembly. The fuel pump assembly just pulls out. If you replace the pump make sure you replace the sock and strainer too. You may want to replace the fuel filter afterwards.

Just replaced the filter in March, 1400 miles ago. Do it again?

You fuel filter is probably okay. I think the reasoning for change would be if it had not been changed in awhile and you are disturbing the S**T in the tank/filter sock that may get into the fuel line.

Do change the filter sock on the pump at the same time.

Dale: Just for future info: I did/used the search function and came up with posts on Location, how to, pics, etc...
To use the search function correctly, use the one on the top bar, not in the current forum, "click to use advanced search", then in the advanced search feature, at the bottom, "click Archive Posts", select the C4 forum (tech or general) and search. This will help you find what you need.
Hope this helps

Dale: 1st is what is she doing that suspects you of a fuel pump related issue? Any codes?
If you just changed the filter, it still could be, but depending on the issues (if you let us know what they are) could be FP sock, pump, relay, injectors, etc, etc, etc...
The more info supplied the easier to get an answer...

No codes. The car bogs when you stomp it from a standing start. Sometimes it will run rough. And occassionally start hard. I seldom let the gas tank get low, but it seems to run worse with less than 1/2 tank.

A dealer had worked on the car, diagnosed it as the O2 sensor, and I let them replace it. It didn't fix it, and the dealer, to their credit, said they'd diagnose the car again for free. Seemed to be a no lose. They finally put a fuel pressure gauge on it, after it quit on them, and diagnosed it as the fuel pump. The symptoms seem consistent with low fuel pressure, so I'm going with that diagnosis, but I'll replace the pump.

So, I go to pick the car up this morning, and the guy drives it around, puts it in park, it keeps going. Tries reverse, it keeps going. Neutral, keeps going. Apparently someone had dropped coins in the ash tray, the coins worked over and cut the shifter cable. So, the dealer is fixing that. Damn.

I'm naming this car Christine.

the cables were cut by coins? That's insane. If that is the case, that took YEARS to do.

I like the fuel pump... It is one reason why many folks were suggesting a fuel pressure gauge to test said pump.

A replacement... damn... Welbro... AC Delco... I don't like Carter... mine whines like the devil.

I watched them take off the shifter plate. There were pennies that were in there that were green. Yep, they had been there a while. I saw the cable, it was munged up, not a clean cut.

I was going to check the fuel pressure, but I figured if the dealer "owes" me, let them check it. That way I can defer buying a gauge for a while. I know I get good advice here.

I'm close to Summit Racing, so I'm going to go pick up an Edelbrock. It's got a higher output, but that's not why I want it. It comes with sock, o ring, and a couple hoses.

the higher output won't matter, your fuel pressure regulator will control that.

you won't need the oring or hoses. The in-tank pumps bolt right into the existing plumbing.

Any opinion of the Edlebrock? Came with the sock, Summit didn't have a sock for the AC/Delco in stock, but said it was $25 just to order that part. So, the cost was pretty similar.

And the car is locked up at the dealer again. They didn't get the shifter cable in time, so there it sits.
