My 84 started acting up today, ran great all day but after being in some slower traffic it now "pulse's" when I give it gas. The surging will continue if I keep the throttle at 1/4 or more open. Can maintain 50 - 65 mph once I get there, and there is zero power at 1/2 to full throttle.
I'm thinking the Fuel filter might be clogging up. It idles great, but no good under load. I made it home took off the air breather, and while running I gave it gas watching the TB's which appear to have a good flow of gas (again not under load} but it still seemed sluggish, not as crisp as usual.
Keep it simple-check the obvious first. Fuel filter definately comes to mind, a dying fuel pump could also cause similar probs. If it is the fuel pump, purchase a pump for an 85 TPI car, a litlle trick the Crossfire crowd has been using for a while now. Avoid the pressure drop from a weak pump when "steppin on it". I won't be back on here till tomorrow, but let me know how you fare. Your stock pump should be putting out 14 psi or so. If it's not the filter I really suspect a bad pump.
I had the same problem a year ago, seems the filter before the pump deteriorated and these pieces lodged in the pump causing it to fail. Replace both..
I replaced the fuel filter, no change, seems worse maybe because it was not warmed up good. I guess it time for a pump?
How and where do you check the fuel pressure?
I s there anything else that could cause this to happen so aburptly?
