Default AC conversion costs?

How much does it cost to have a AC system converted from R12 to r134a? Also, should I take it to the dealer to have it done, or look for an AC shop near by?

$200 - $300. I'm not a mechanic, I try to do small stuff. The AC conversion seems a little messy to me. Technically, you have to capture the R12, and flush the system. Venting R12 to the atmosphere will make Al Gore cry.
Anyway, you have to completely flush the system, as I understand it, mixing R12 and R134a will corrode the system, big time.

I paid the money.

I believe a switch needs replaced as well and after flushing a vacuum needs to be pulled on the system. IMO that the R134 cools different. I have noticed in several vehicles that when at idle the air is warmer than cruising. However 88 blows pretty cold air at idle and it was converted when I got it

R12 is about 10 degrees cooler than R134. If you can save you R12 system may be something to consider. Tim

R12 is also roughly 1000 times the price of 134 for refridgerant.

The conversion is very simple and inexpensive, usually under $100 here. I do them myself, as all the things needed are about $30.

Thanks everyone for the help. It looks at the moment that I will have to have the whole system rebuilt.

If your whole system has to be rebuilt then it's probably worthit to convert to R134. If your R12 system is working fine but only needs a recharge the cost of a conversion can outweigh the added cost of R12.

As stated earlier to do the conversion properly all of the R12 has to be removed or else the system can corrode.
