Default Interior Paint?????

I finished my project. The black door sill trim looks great black against the grey carpet on the doors and floors. Next I want to paint the seat belt covers and console side trim. How do you remove these panels? Oh, I have an 85...if it makes a difference. Thanks, Zak.

color is your call, but use the search function on the How to Paint Interior pieces to get the correct process and prep work to do the job right.

Just used the search function and found 30 posts w/pics and links: Don't know how your searching but:

Use the Search function (main menu bar - not within the current forum)
Click "Advanced Search" (at bottom)
Click " Include Archive posts" (at bottom of search screen)
Select "C4 Tech or general section)
Type: Interior parts painting or plastic painting
Should find what your need

Note at the top of the page you see the keywords entered. The search function takes a bit of playing with to get the info you need. Maybe Vinnie will break loose with those 30 links...

Your question was, "How do you think it will look" and not, "How do you do it." So, I think that since your interior has black already in it, I believe it will look fine if you do it in black.

Thanks for the links. I was looking at MidAmerica and they sell a can of plastic prep for painting trim. Will this be good enough to have the piece clean enough to paint? Ok, this is what I want to do. I want to make the trim around the sills and console sides to blend into the rest of the black trim in the car. They also sell a gloss and high gloss clear coat when you are done. Which of these do you think would best match the overhead trim, or do I not need that? Also, how can I keep the paint from rubbing? Does the clear coat serve this purpose also?

Well, I also need to know how to do it also. When I had the Trans Am, we tried to paint the interior panels, but they were new and we didnt think to prep them...they pilled.

Maybe I'm a bit too literal, because everyone else here who responded knew you wanted to know how to paint it - except me. If I see a question, I respond to the asked question and not to what may be surrounding it. So, as you said, it's all in the prep work. As the others have said, I'm sure there's loads of info. located in the search functions.

I never painted anything on the interior, but have on the exterior. And the final product rests on how much time and effort you put into the prep. I'm not sure what this interior plastic prep does, but I would sand down what you need painted. Then probably apply the prep and then sand again (much higher grit). Then if you want the spot to shine, apply the high or low gloss, depending on how the rest of the interior looks.

No. You should clean the pieces with laquer thinner or alcohol first. The plastic prep is good stuff too. It's more of a primer that kinda melts the primer into the plastic.

I want to start off by saying I am by no means an expert at this.. However after talking to a young man at the local auto Paint Center, I did the following on my 87.
On his advice I bought an 8oz can of Adhesive, Wax, & Mark remover at Pep Boys.... (Made by 3M) and wiped all the pieces down. If you use this, follow the directions.. "lightly rub area to be cleaned" and let dry completely. I then applied 3 light coats of Dupli-Color Bumper Coating. It went on great. I think it really looks good. I painted some of the Black console parts light grey/silver. It seems very durable. I've bumped the painted areas several times and no scratches or chips.. So Far!! ..I did this about 6 months ago and after several months of summer heat it still looks new.. I don’t want to post any pics till I'm completely done with the interior which should be in a couple weeks...

FYI: the big and main are PREP, PREP... i've found that washing with dawn inbetween all process before priming is the key.... sand, wash, degrease, wash, etc... then primer, sand, primer, light sand, coat1, sand, coat2 sand, coat3, satin clear coat... time and more time is your best friend and will ensure quality work...
Also if your follow the search listing i posted, and mix up the search listings, such as (interior parts, painting interior, painting, interior plastic, plastic painting, and the list goes on and on, but your find some and more each time, you just need to go thru, again time is your best friend.... good luck

Soap and water is fine for prepping as well... I'd be leary of using too harsh of a chemical on the interior plastic... but that's just me.

Anyway, I had good luck when I repainted my interior pieces a few years ago (scroll about 2/3 of the way down if you want to see before and after pics).
