Really? I'm not doubting you, but could you explain this theory?
I own two of these beast. I have had this problem with both of them over the years. When it's the fuel supply (like the pump or the reg, which BTW I've had go bad also) the car just won't start or run end of story. Both times when the cars would not start right...it was a faulty temp sensor. The temp sensor tells the computer how to start the engine in the ambient temp...timing advance, mix etc. Both times, both cars...I got no light or code, just the symptom!
Do you hear the fuel pump priming when the key is turned "on"? If not, you may have a bad/faulty fuel pump relay. I would suggest to verify fuel pressure via a guage attached to the schrader valve on the passenger side fuel rail. If there is no pressure when the key is on, then you need to test the fuel pump relay and wiring. Also, the oil pressure switch located at the rear left side of the intake manifold, is a back up for the fuel pressure relay. The circuit should close as soon as 4 psi of oil pressure is made when cranking. If the oil pressure switch is the only way to prime the fuel pump, the cranking times will be longer than normal.
I posted a similar problem just like this about 4 months ago. For some reason the car would not turn over until the 4th or 5th crank. It would crank but it would not turn over. Once running it would run fine. But when it sat overnight or for a period of time it would do the same thing. My mechanic checked to see if he could pinpoint the problem. He could not find it. Anyway, as the months went on the car slowly started hesitating, especially when I took off. I decided to change the fuel pump in the tank (easy job). The hesitation and the hard start were gone. I hope this helps. By the way I have an 89.
Is it consistently hard to start? If so it definitely sounds fuel related. Sounds as though after enough cranks it is getting enough fuel to eventually fire. I would check the fuel pressure and then go from there. If good fuel pressure then the injectors, if the fuel pressure is bad then the fuel pump. What you may do in the mean time is run some fuel injector cleaner through it. If it has dirty injectors it may clean them out. Good luck and keep us posted.
