My son just called, he has "SYS" flashing on the readout where the gas mileage average usually is on his 93. All functions are normal aside from this. Any ideas?
Same thing has been happening with my '93 since I took it out of storage this last Spring.
The owners manual states that it means something is amiss in the ECM. It seems odd that that's what it could be seeing as everything else seems fine. I've been driving it all summer with no problems.

Happend to me when the battery was low and had just enough juice left to start the motor. Put bat on the the charger and the SYS light went away.
Hmm, that's interesting. I did have to jump-start my car when it came out of storage. It's a no-name battery that the previous owner put in.
Maybe I'll replace it before I put it away for the winter and see what happens.
Funny I would find this post today. Picked up mine from the shop yesterday where it was for a week to have the door ajar button replaced, now my "sys" light is also blinking.
The SYS message simply means that a code has been set. Retrieve it to see what the real problem is. It could be one of the suggestions here, or one of many other things that the ECM/CCM controls.
When you guys say
"run codes" is it like the check engine light in other vehicles? Can my auto parts store run the codes?
Yes. Each computer module (ECM/CCM/PCM/ABS/etc.) will set a code when it sees something wrong. Your parts store will be able to read them for you.
For our '96s at least, the check engine light will be set when a PCM code is present, and the other modules will use the "SYS" alert. (If I'm remembering correctly from the manual.)
I have noticed that my own code reader only sees the OBDII PCM codes (PXXXX format) for some reason. Since you are seeing the "SYS", you should expect a code in a CXX or HXX format - if you don't get one, then have the store try a better reader/scanner or follow the method to display CCM/ECM codes on the dash. OBDII PCM codes cannot be shown on the dash.
Take the terminals off your battery, wait a few minutes, and rehook them up. Chances are your system will reset and youll be fine.
I took the negative battery cable off today for five minutes and what do you know the "SYS" message went away . I wish I knew it was that easy I've been looking at that dang light flashing all summer. I'm still going to replace the battery before it goes into winter storage though.

After having a run-down battery, I also had a flashing "SYS" on my 90 conv, with a Pioneer replacement radio (the Bose was toast when I got it). I found this on the forum...
I have not disconnected the negative battery lead (reset), confirmed the codes or installed the resistors yet; it just happened today for the first time ever. After giving it a jump and driving around for an hour, it runs fine. The "SYS" is more of a nuisance than anything. Hope this helps...
