I drove my 1984 Corvette to town the other day and when I started it up from getting gas, I heard a chime, similar to when the lights are left on, but I couldn't figure out what it was. It was then I noticed the tachometer was no longer working so I shut off the car and restarted it thinking it might reset but it didn't.
The display lights up and dims just like it always has but it still does not register the engine RPM's. Is there something that I could check or a way to initiate a self check / reset for this? It appears to work very briefly upon starting but I realized it just lights up 27 before going back to zero.
Hopefully one of you will be able provide some additional insight and maybe this particular cluster will not need to be replaced.
PS: This car is in excellent condition and has less than 18K miles.
Check the connections from the distrubitor (white wire), follow it down to the tach filter and make sure the tach filter is grounded good, follow it from the tach filter to the connection at the firewall. If the tach filter is good, grounded properly, and all connections are good....the problem is at the dash cluster.
Will I need to remove anything such as the air cleaner, etc.? Will it hurt anything to drive it without the tach working? Thanks for your help and I'll check this out before moving any farther.
