Default C4 Engine Code location

I am thinking of buying a 96 Collectors Ed. I looked at one so far. I could not find the engine code to cross reference with the vin under the windshield. Can someone tell me where the engine code is located and if I should even care in regards to a C4.

Thanks in Advance!

If the LTx engines are like previous small blocks the number should be on a flat pad just ahead of the right (passenger) side valve cover.

I would care if the car is an LT4.

Yea, I think the LT1/4 engines have the engine code and last 5 of the VIN on the pad at right front. Pad surface is same as block face. The code letters should be ZXA for an LT-1 and ZXD for an LT-4. Easy to tell: LT-1's were only mated to autos and LT-4s only to sticks.

I think the "last 5" may also be stamped on the L rear of the block bellhousing flange, near the oil filter. I tried to verify the above but my engine code book has turned up missing along with my '89 FSM. Now I have to figure out where they are! You should care, especially with a collector edition. Someday it may make a big difference in what the car is worth to a purist.
