I grew up working on cars. When I was a teenager that's what teenagers did. No nintendo, 2 TV channels (Black & white). Bought a 1953 Ford for $10 when I was 15 and took it completely apart to learn how it worked. Never did get it all back together, lol.
Love my '84. Easy to work on; simple computer; classic small block. The only thing I might not try is the tranny internals, but I put a shift kit in three weeks ago with no problems. Ported my intake myself.
I feel sorry for all the younger guys who don't know jack about a car and have to take it to a shop.
Most of the time I would not let anyone work on it. I have a trusted mechanic however, I would rather work on it myself. When I was in high school, working on cars was what we did. Not TV or video games. My first car was a a 1963 Ford Falcon which I got for free and took it completely apart to free up a frozen motor. I Love my Vette and I do let my mechanic do work on it that I don't feel I can do or just lazy. The one thing I would never do is tranny work, I have an old high school friend who has a tranny shop that I take my cars to. The one job I have planned is to Port and polish my runners myself, never done it but there is allways a frist time :)
I wish more younger people would start in this hobby. I have teens that do not know jack about cars who think hey do.
I do all my own work. I have a trusted tranny guy I'll give the trans to, and a good friend with a machine shop for my porting and such. I don't do complete paint jobs either. But everything else I do for myself and work on other cars on the side for mod money for my toys :yesnod:

Re: Do you work on your Vette? (AS84)
I do the simple R & R type of repairs. I have a trusted mechanic who I watch over his shoulder when he works on it. Guess trust only goes so far, but then again at the high shop rate these days, maybe I'll learn something I can use later.
I do everything that I can that doesnt require specialized equipt. Sometimes I make a few small mistakes, have to look some stuff up but thats what you guys are here for and thats why I enjoy my car for more than just being pretty.
Its sad that theres about 30 of us at my highschool of 1500 that know what the hell were doing (sometimes i have to use that term loosley-- usually in the school shop where we work on broken ars stuff with old equipt.) but one of my best friends wanted to wax his car. A black plymouth breeze-- ok sure. How do you do it he says  . pretty sad when theres only a select few who undestand what youre talking about when you say "I polished the valve covers."
Kinda pathetic and sad at the same time. :mad
I have to agree with Nitro Junkie, working on cars was what we did growing up. I remember when I was 7-8 years old laying under a 54 Chevy Pick-up outside in the middle of winter with my old man replacing the clutch,T/O bearing, etc. All I did at the time was just hand him the tools but...It kind of grows on you! Fortunately 40+ years later, the only time the vehicle goes to the garage is for an alignment and inspection.

Re: Do you work on your Vette? (GRX)
Everything I am able to do. This excludes gearbox internals, paint and stuff that requires fabrication although I intend on learning the skills to do these things when time and other factors permit.
When I build my motor I'd like to be the one to assemble it rather than having it done for me although I'll have to see how things look when that time comes.
I do anything that I can as long as we have the tools/equipment to accomplish it. :yesnod:
I would think with that nicely equiped truck that your dad parks in the driveway you would have the best of the best to work with :yesnod: I would be like a kid in a candy store and be his best customer :blueangel:
I restore old cars & bikes for fun in the winter time. I will work on my cars up until they are restored then I find it more economical (and time saving) to have the Corvette/European repair shop down the street take care of the simple things (Brakes, Water pumps, Fuel Injectors, etc...). Due to many of the specialized tools (and a lift) are pretty pricey for a one time job.
I only buy NEW cars for my daily drivers and if something goes wrong....thats what warranties are for! :D
I go with the (Ken)L98 Terror selection if it is something I don't care to tackle. Actually I am heading over tonight to have a new wheel bearing thrown on.
