Transmissions Don't Fix Themselves?
As I reported a couple of weeks ago, the auto tranny on my '85 decided to pick new shift points. Instead of the "normal" shifting from first to second at about 12-15 mph, it didn't shift until 28-28 mph, and 3000 rpm's; 2nd to 3rd was 35-38 mph and 3000 rpm's, instead of 25-28mph. So I made an appointment with my trusted local independent mechanic to check it out. It goes to the shop tomorrow morning bright and early. But on Saturday, I decided to take the '85 on a road trip of about 100 miles. I noticed when I hit the town of my destination, the shift points were right back to "normal"! I came home, no issues, and now the shift points are still "back to normal". What gives? Did it somehow fix itself? Perhaps a clogged filter? I plan to have my mechanic look at it anyway, flush the fluid and replace. Any thoughts on what could have caused this?

if its intermittent like that, my first guess would be a electrical problem. could be anything from a speed sensor to TV cable. im not too experienced in non electronically controlled transmissions though

TV cable? hell, that's your first mistake son,Satelite Dish is just as cheap and you get a hell of a lot more chanels, but, I don't see what that would have to do with your tranny.

This thread is like a stupid contest.
Last time that happened to me was when TV linkage loosened up (not on my vette). It took a lot of rpms to build up enough hydraulic pressure to upshift. I don't see how it could ever adjust itself back though. I would pull the pan and check the tv linkage for proper movement.

Thanks. I have a good friend who is a mechanic and has owned several Vettes (unfortunately, he's 500 miles away from me) who suggested the TV linkage be checked, that was his guess.

Well, got it back from the shop. The proprietor told me he thought it was a "sticky governor". He says he "hopes" that by doing a transmission flush and replacing the fluid that it continues to run well. He said to replace the governor would involve breaking open the transmission, and could cost "big bucks". Hope it hangs together!

Assuming 2 hours labor and a BRAND NEW governor, it is a $125-$150 job.
I suggest finding a new guy.

Wow! Thanks! Took it on a cruise around the lake this evening, everything is running well....thanks for the info....hopefully the transmission service/flush did the trick. It's been a weird thing all around, first it didn't shift "correctly" then all of a sudden it begins to run well again.

Update: after about 3 weeks of the transmission running smoothly after a fluid/filter change, the same old problem again crept up. Wouldn't shift from 1st to 2nd until almost 4000 rpm's. So I took it to a mechanic where I live who specializes in "high performance and muscle cars". He immediately said "it sounds like a sticky governor, I'll look at it and give you a call if it's something different". Indeed, he removed the governor, cleaned it up, put it back in the car and it drives smoothly again. Thanks for the input from everyone on the forum!
