I noticed today while driving my 86 corvette if I punch it off the line with my over-drive switch off and shift through all gears I get this sputtering from my exhaust. Is this the factory govenor keeping
me from going to fast ?
An L98 in good stock tune should be able to run 5000 RPM or a little over in each gear. 4500 should be no sweat in terms of running smoothly and strong. My 87 will easily hit 5500 RPM before the fuel cutoff.
I would also look at the condition of the air filter, spark plugs, plug wires, and the distributor cap. Check the coil output and fuel pressure, and maybe do a compression test. Replace the fuel filter too.
thank you for all the help, I"am new to working on my 86 corvette I replaced the cap and rotor the other day. but did not replace the plugs and wires. I don't have a timing light to give it a good tune-up. But I will learn to tune up my own car.
