1984 1st code..

1984 1st code..
i have an 84 that just threw it's 1st code..ever. it says 42 which is a emc ground or a hei problem. however, it runs like it always has and that has me mistified. has anyone has an experience with this particular code, if so, what did you do. i sure would appreciate any info on the problem before i have to go to a "dealer service facility"???

Don't go to a shop with a code. You can spend the money they would charge you and purchase a FSM (factory service manual) and check it out yourself.
Not sure if the 84 is the same as 86, but that is a EST code on my car. Check to make sure the EST wire (tan with black stripe) is connected between the brake booster and distrubitor or if the wire insulation is good.
disconnect the neg cable on the battery for 30 sec to clear the codes. That might be your first step to see if the code comes back.
