Default First time drag racing! Need advice

On 9/21/07, I will be giving this a shot fot the first time, and I would like some basic advise from some of you all.

Heres a quick rundown:
1/8 mile track. I have not done a test and tune night, although I have meant to, but time just hasn't allowed this summer.

My car is an 85 auto; no real mods, just a tpis open box and a catless stock exhaust. 6 degrees BTDC timing. Running hard, old eagle GS-C tires. 3.07 Rear, and car runs AOK.

My buddys' car is a fairly stout 90 Mustang GT 302, I think he told ne 3.55 gears w/ drag radials.

Any advice guys?? I appreciate it !!

A mostly stock auto is pretty easy to give advic for.

I assume you will be able to make multiple passes during your time there and can play around with different combinations of how to do things.

Launch at 1500 RPM and see how the tires hold up.
If they do, goto 1800 RPM on the next pass.
Keep going up a few hundred RPMs at a time until you break the tires loose on launch.

When this finally happens, then let some air out of the rear tires and try that same RPM out again. If still spinning, let some more out. I run mine at around 25PSI on my 6 speed.

DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH THE WATER BOX! GO AROUND IT!!!
I can't stress that enough.

With street tires do NOT do a burnout. It will only leave dollar signs, not good smoke.

There really isn't much to drag racing an auto IMO.

I agree with all of the above, Saturday night at track watched a 1986 vette with auto and street tires. He went through water box and turned a 14.6 and 97 mph through traps. Personally I wouldn't run for any money against your buddy, just tell him yours looks better in a photo shoot.
