Default A Little Help Please

Ok, I was out driving the vette today and everything was great. Went home for a little while and than decided to go for another ride. Well that where it all falls apart for me. I have an 89 coupe with a 6 speed, I pulled out of the driveway and went up the street shifted from 1st to 2nd and all of a sudden when I hit the gas pedal the car started to lose horsepower and started to buck alittle so of course I pushed the clutch in thinking it was gonna stall but no stall so let the clutch out again and the same thing but if i just give a little gas it was ok and was able to go into 3rd gear but samething when i hit the gas pedal, so this happened in all gears, it will go if i bareley give it gas but if i give it alot it just bogs down. So I of course took the car home and while I was parked in the driveway in neutral I floored the gas pedal and when the rpms got upto about 4000 it just bogged itself down. So the help I am looking for is where to start to find out what is wrong. By the way the car has no codes it was the first thing I checked. I was thinking that it might be a clogged cat but before I started doing anything I figured it would be best to see what the experts thought. So any suggestions on where to start will be very appreciated.

You can check for a clogged cat by using a back pressure gauge, hitting the cat with a rubber hammer or block of wood and listen for rattling, or look at the cat at night after the engine has warmed up...for it to be glowing.

Other than that, check the spark plug wires at night while the engine is running. Ohm the injectors. Change the fuel filter. Check fuel pressure while driving and when the problem occurs. Make sure not low on fuel.

No codes, so first I would check would be fuel delivery--ie filter first. Then some pressure readings to check frp, pump, relay, etc.

I hate to disagree with the last posts but I would look at the ignition. Hell I am so new to my 88 that I am not sure if I have a HEI system but I bet I do. That dist fails quickly and is cheap to replace the cap and rotor on a regular basis. Just my 2 cs

Had a similar problem, checked the fuel filter, it was good, ran a test on the fuel pump and there she was, rotten! Good Luck

Thank you guys for the suggestions, I'm gonna start with the fuel filter and go from there. I'll let you guys know how I make out. Will be working on it this weekend. Thanks again for the suggestions.

t00ms: Did the performance of the car suddenly go south or were you seeing a gradual decrease in engine performance?

If it runs ok at idle and low speed but bogs or dies at higher revs then it is not getting enough of something fast enough. Fuel, breath, or spark, in that order. Often it is a combo.

Make sure you were not low on fuel. My gauge was reading inaccurate and I felt like I lost power one day. Got home and let it idle. Finally turned it off and it would not restart the next day. I was low on fuel.

I had a similar problem with my automatic.
It suddenly acted just like you described . I came to the same conclusions but was wrong.
You won't believe it. It turned out to be a bad temperature sending unit. Didn't make a lot of sense to me but apparently it was confusing the fuel supply by thinking theengine was cold.
Anyway,...about $12 and haven't had problem since.
Good luck.

Buy, borrow or beg a fuel pressure gauge. This will give you the information you need about the fuel system without a lot of guessing and disassembly.

The fuel filter on my 89 was almost completely clogged up, check the first. A cheap 7 buck fix......maybe.
