My 89 Coupe with 150,000 trouble free miles seems to be feeling it's age. Last night the passenger side headlight would come up...but not stay up. Just swung loose in the opening. How can I repair this headlight bucket? Thanks for the help.
Most likely the three "pellets" in the motor have disintegrated. Fairly cheap and easy to replace. Try searching past threads, this comes up at least once a week.
If your motors spin for 15 seconds or so, and the light is left halfway down, it is because the clutch in the motor has disintegrated. The clutch is made up of an inverted clover leaf casting, and some nylon rollers. The rollers have been ground down to powder. The fix will take you 5 minutes more time than it would take to swap out the motors, and it will save you a few hundred bucks.
The only special tool required is the correct Torx wrench.
Then follow these instructions: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/zrjuan/headlight.html Pay particular attention to how the loose fitting metal piece on the shaft goes on (take a picture). Pay attention to the very thin spacer washers that are in various places on the shaft when you dissassemble it.
It will take you about an hour and a half for the first one, and less than an hour for the second one. Your headlights will work like they are on Viagra.
Corvettes age about twice as fast as humans, so it is not suprising that it has an erectile disorder.
I am having a similar problem with my headlights. I drove mine for the first time in about a year after finally replacing my faulty fuel injectors and replacing leaky intake gaskets. The last time I drove my vette before doing the work the headlight doors opened both fast and together. Today on my first test drive the P/S door opened fully and the D/S only opened about 1/2 way. I popped the hood open and tapped the door lightly and it then fully opened. When I turned them off they both closed normally. The second time I turned the lights on both headlight doors opened 1/2 way to 2/3 of the way. I then pushed them open only to have them freely swing back to the semi-opened position. I thought that maybe there was a vaccum assist on the doors and that maybe I'd crimped a line or left something disconnected only to find that these doors only have electric motors to do the deed. Do I likely have the same problem as the original poster or is there something else that I should look for? Thanks for any help.

the kits are about 5 bucks or you can buy the same bushing from Home Depot for about fifty cents. If you search this forum you should find links with the exact part number to ask for.
