My wife has an '86 convertible and we want to put different wheels on it. Does anyone have any experience with the wheel spacers that allow you to use '88 and up wheels? I can't find any aftermarket wheels to replace the 16 inch stock wheels.
Thanks
Chris
You can get adapters from the various accessory catalogs or from Vette Brakes. They are pricey but it's the correct way to install the later C4 wheels on the 84-87 cars.
If you want the ZR-1 style wheel, AFS Wheels has a specific 9.5x17" wheel with the proper 38mm offset for the early cars. They sell on eBay; do a search there for "AFS Corvette wheels". They have silver powder coated, chrome, black, and black chrome versions. You can get tire and wheel sets too.
Try Tom-Z-Wheels. I found a set of torq-thrustII's that look great on my 85 and no adaptors needed. They can let you know what's availiable that don't need adaptors. Also had great prices.
you can put virtually any later 17" wheels on there. Those with 50/58mm offset will sit inboard about an inch. It's hardly noticable except to other vetties. You can space them out with adaptors but it's not really a good idea. There are ZR1 clones available with the correct 36mm offset.I've just put a set on with 9.5 front and 11 rears.

It'll be noticeable if the car is lowered, you can tell by the hole the tire will rub in the wheelwell on the backside. No, it didn't happen to me.
I've had 3/4" adapters on my '85 since I got it, they were there when I got the car. It's been on many a long road trip and is driven hard through any twisties I might find. A few guys here on the forum even use them succesfully on their autocross cars. Just be sure and get the good ones, they are pricy. Of course the ideal thing to do is go on ebay and search either AFS or OER wheels and get the ones with the proper offset so you don't need adapters.

FactoryReproductions.com has several direct fit wheel choices for the '86. Visit their website, send them an email with your request. Also, they sell on that auction site we all know of. Do a search for '84-87 Corvette' to see your wheel choices. Using Adapters is never a good idea.
