Default Tranny Vibration

I have a weird tranny vibration I only notice at idle and slow speeds. If you put the car in neutral it goes away. I have checked the fluid and it is fine. I have used the search button but couldn't find anything. I don't notice it while driving but that doesn't mean it is not there. The car is an 85 witth the 700r4 the tranny has a 9 1/2" converter and a shift kit. Tranny has 600 miles on it. The only thing I can think of is that a torque converter bolt has come loose. It is definately getting worse. I guess I will figure it out when it breaks but I would like to catch it before then if possible. Any help is appreciated!

Shouldn't be that big of a deal to remove the inspection cover and check the converter bolts, could save you a lot of money if that is the cause. Seems like a converter problem would do it in neutral too but who knows, good luck.

I am going to check them tonight. If that's not it I am going to be real confused. The weird thing is when it started it was hardly noticeable. I have driven it about 30 miles since it started and it has gotten terribly worse which is why i Think it might be the torque converter bolts. Sorry guys just thinking outloud.

Just checked the bolts on the converter and they were all tight. I have no idea what it could be now.

Bob,
Sorry to hear of your trans troubles.
It is an unusual situation, based on the symptoms. I would first do the following:
Disconnect the 3 torque converter bolts from the flexplate, and slide the torque converter toward the rear of the car, thus disengaging the converter from the engine.
If the vibration remains, look closely at the harmonic balancer to see it the outer ring has slipped. If the problem goes away, then it is obviously behind the flexplate. Almost nothing inside the trans can cause the symptoms you describe, in my opinion. That would leave the converter suspect. It is also possible that something else is the problem as well. Exhaust rubbing the chassis, wheel bearings, u-joints, half shaft joints etc are all possibilities as well, But disconnecting the converter and idling the engine seems like a good first step toward a diagnosis.
Rest assured that the converter is guaranteed by the builder for 1 year. I have yet to have a defective unit come from them, but they are human, and it is a possibility that this problem is a defective part(internally), a weight falling off or poor workmanship. In my gut, I am confident that poor workmanship is a non issue, but things happen
Keep us posted.

So I should take the torque converter loose and then start the car with it pulled back? The only reason I ruled out the u joints is because it does it while sitting still at idle. Atleast it happened going into the winter and I got some good drive time in! Sh*t happens and you have helped me out a bunch Pete and I appreciate it. Hopefully it is something stupid that is an easy fix. Thanks for all the help!
