Default Dang it always something !!

Spent two days just fixing minor things. Repaired a leak that was labor extensive. Removed alot of stuff to get to it, but its fixed. After running tons of water over the area to watch for leaks I guess it got under the SIR sensor, so after all that I now have to stare at the Infl Res light until this weekend. I basically will remove everything that I had off again. It never ends.

Sometimes ya can fix that problem by taking the sensor off the frame and sanding the bottom of the sensor and also cleaning the frame rail where the sensor bolts to. Also 2 small star washers on the bolts help make a better ground. DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY before doing any work on this sensor! Then clear the code from the computer. If this does not work the sensor is bad and needs to be replaced $60 from GM let us know how ya make out Pipe

just don't forget the dielectric grease!

You may want to pull the code just to be sure....left sensor bad ground condition sets a 16. The only thing with a 16 is if the ground isn't the problem then check the connector under the steering collum for corrosion....if that's not the trouble then the SIR module is N/G.....the DERM I think it's called.

I have the same issues with my 90.....been looking at the INF REST & the seat belt sign for a week now.

For kicks I tried to reset (clear) the code the other night. Thinking it might have dried out. Well I got right on three attempts and cleared the code. Well it lasted about 30 seconds and came back on. I will pull the sensor this weekend, got everything I need, did the right side a few months ago.

You should Ohm the sensors to see which one is bad. The connectors are down in the footwells. Ya gotta peel back the carpet down there to get to em. Thats where the connectors come through the firewall from the sensors. I have the Ohm specs here somewhere. The connectors only have 3 pins to Ohm. Let me get a shovel and look for em. Pipe

Its done. Pulled the sensor and there was lost crud underneath it. Cleaned it up and even cleaned and reset a couple of ground wires connected behind the sensor itself. Got the code reset on the second attempt. Lets see whats happens next !!! Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Pipe I have a Q. First, Dean (aka Dads90) I apologize for the hi-jack!:o

If you want to do an ohm test on the sensor is it okay to use a digital VOM or is it a must to use the special tool listed in the FSM? The FSM says not to use a "powered" VOM to test any part of the SIR system.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom it's ok to use the digital ohm meter to test the sensors DISCONNECT THE BATTERY before you do any testing!!! Since you are testing the pigtail coming from the sensor there is no power there so you are ok. Usually it's a frame sensor thats bad and I never had to ohm the leads coming from the Derm Module behind the Stereo sys. If you ohm the Derm Module leads that might blow the Air Bags cause I think there is power supplied to the Derm. Pipe

Thanks pipe!

Yea, I was thinking all I wanna do is get the ohms readings for the sensors so I can see if they are within spec.....it's just sometimes the stuff in the FSM is a bit beyond my comprehension.

No problem Tom good luck with the fix. Shame this only happens to 1990"s I'm lucky I never had to replace the Derm module behind the Stereo cause it's a pain in the #$*! Most times it's the frame Sensors that are bad keep us posted. Pipe

Default I knew it !!!

Now that I have fixed the sensor problem, now the AC quit working (low freon, code 09) Well, I get to resolve that issue this weekend, as I said "it never ends".
