SYS Problem
On the dash of my 96 lt1 auto coupe next to the miles per hour i get a flashing SYS symbol. It keeps doing this the whole time the car is running. The SYS light comes on then blinks twice then it goes to the miles per gallon and then continues to repeat that process. Any one have any ideal what this is and how to fix it? No codes are stored either.

Did you make a change to the Audio system? If so there are a couple of resistors you will need to add. There is a thread in the Tech/Perf explaining how to correct it. There are also some others causes, but that is yhe most common.

Are you sure? Looking in my service manual, stored codes for CCM monitored systems are what the message means.
How did you check for codes? My OBDII code reader seems to only retrieve PCM codes, for which the check engine light is lit. For some reason, I can't see the CCM codes with it, even though they are present (aftermarket radio is my malfunction) and can be displayed on the dash using the paperclip jumper method.
If you had someone like Autozone check codes, they probably used a similar code reader which might behave the same way. I'd suggest that another look is in order using another code reader and/or the on-board functionality.
** Keep in mind that PCM codes cannot be displayed on the dash for the '96 OBDII cars, contrary to that part of the service manual.

Yes there is an aftermarket stereo installed. They hooked it up wrong also it stays on when you turn the car off hadn't had time to check it out yet have just been taking the face plate off it to turn it off. I will look for the forum about the resistors and rewire and install them this weekend. Thanks

If "SYS" is displayed in the LCD section of the instrument panel cluster after the customer installs a new (aftermarket) stereo, he will need to do the following:
1. Buy (2) 1 kilo-ohm 1/2 watt resistors. [Radio Shack part # 271-023. They sell them as a 2pk for .29 cents.]
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the receiver.
4. Connect one end of both resistors to ignition power. (Yellow wire in the car)
5. Connect the other end of one resistor to the purple/white wire in the car.
6. Connect the other end of the second resistor to the grey/black wire in the car.
7. Cover all connections and completely cover the resistors.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
It works...

There is a "delayed accessory bus" which will feed power to the radio until the driver's door is opened, even after the key is removed. It is possible that your connections are fine (except for the resistors, as mentioned).

ground (black)
antenna (blue)
illumination (orange)
pwr with ign on (red)
pwr at all times (yellow)
you should have going directly to the speakers:
Right Rear - purple/ purple black
Left Rear - green/ green black
Right Front - grey/ grey black
Left Front - white/ white black
on the car:
