Default Removing LT1 Valve Covers

How hard is it to remove 1992 valve covers, mine need to be re-painted. Is there a write up on it?

Also oil is leaking from the seams on both sides, what do I need to replace?

I replaced my valve cover gaskets on my 95. I'm not sure if it's exactly like your 92, check your FSM. The cork gaskets would not work. There were special rubber gaskets I had to buy that fit in the valve covers groove. By very careful that your torque wrench is not broke like mine was or you will be braking off the cover bolts and replacing them like I did. The screws require a large Torx bit, I don't remember the size. Get a good set there are a lot of those torx screws all over the car. The only thing I remember being in the way was the black bracket in the picture. My EGR was already removed by the time I did this, but I think the pipe cleared the passenger cover. I used this swap as an opportunity to pull the alternator and paint it with high temp cast color paint I picked up from auto-zone. I also taped up and covered some of the engine compartment and painted the AC condenser without removing it. I also painted the PCM and a few other things. This pic was before the painting. It was a bit of a pain getting the new flimsy rubber gasket in the groove of the cover and positiong it correctly to tighten down without it falling out. Get someone to help and take your time with it. Of course all this only applies if yours is similar to my 95.

Good Luck.

Good luck repainting them. I've got a 92 also and was going to powder coat mine. Once I stipped them down, they were so pitted that there was no saving them. Under the paint is a rubber like coating. GM must have used this to smooth out all the pits. I've read that the casts were bad on these valve covers. Anyway, I choose to replace them with some after market ones. As far as the swap, it's not hard. Just remove whats in the way and replace when done You can PM me if you have any questions. Here's a pic of the new valve covers.

I powder coated mine. I did sand them down to remove some of the irregularities. The powder coating was thick enough to fill most problem areas.

You can also replace them with a set of newer valve covers. Here is a pic of a 92 with LT4 valve covers.
