Yep, door says 11/83, but under the console between the seats it says Julian Date 62468......Whats that all about??????
Click the link below, read, and confuse yourself about Julian dates. I understand the concept but I need a beer to help take it in from this article. We used them in the Army for supply and parts ordering; although a Julian date can thusly be proprietary, and only resemble the true Julian calendar. In this case, albeit I don't know it true, Chevrolet could be constructing a Julian calendar based on some sequence of events in the original building of the Corvette. By that I mean the Julian date of 00001 could represent the first day or lunar cycle of the Corvette. It would depend on what they based their dates on. Synonymously IBM and other manufacturers have their own "Julian Calendar" based on the invention or introduction of their product. Is the mud clearer or did I create a mudslide??

So if Im getting this right ONLY GM can understand those number?
That would be true IF and only IF the statement is correct. That's why I was using other examples. I don't know for positive that Chevy was doing that although it is a high possibility for their own record keeping. When we had to use such calendars for aircraft parts I had a matrix that converted month/day/year to a Julian Date.
Many businesses that involve production lines use a form of "Ordinal Dates" and that is typically what appears on the build sheet It's a usually a 5-position value where the year was the first two digits, followed by a three digit value where January 1st was 001 and went to December 31st as being 365 (or 366 for Leap Year). Sometimes the date is shown with a forward slash between the year and the consective date as in 83/304
So for November 1983, the "Ordinal Date" range would be 83304 through 83333.
This date on the build sheet may not be the day that the car actually starts down the assembly line. It may be the date the car was scheduled for production or the date the order was entered into the system. There are different versions or formats of the build sheet and some will even have a time printed below the date.

Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
