1988 with 81,000 miles. New pads and rotors at 72,500, brakes are very hard. Car will stop but must apply hard to brake pedal. Questions is what the possible problem? Master Cylinder or Power Brake Booster. Or something else?
That's usually a sign that the power booster is out to lunch.
You can check for a vacuum leak on the booster with a hand vacuum pump. Adapt the vacpump to the booster vacuum feed hose and pull about 12" hg or a bit more and see if it holds the vacuum. If it doesn't then it's n/g. You could also let some one else step on the brake while you listen for any hissing from the booster. You should also make sure that the check valve is good.
Generally when the pedal gets like a rock and you have to stand on it to get any stopping it's uaually a sign that the booster is shot.
